Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed in a phone call on Wednesday with his Israeli counterpart, Gabi Ashkenazi, means to coordinate the next meeting for the quartet group, which comprises Egypt, Germany, France, and Jordan, to revive the Palestinian peace process.

A foreign ministry statement said the meeting, which has been under preparation since December, would take place within the next few days.

The meeting will include the foreign ministers of the quartet and their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts.

The quartet are “the group of countries that aim to push forward the peace efforts in the region during the coming period, in coordination with the United States and all relevant parties,” the ministry said.

Shoukry also discussed in a phone call with Riyad Al-Maliki, the Palestinian foreign minister, Egypt’s efforts in reaching a just and permanent solution to the Palestinian cause based on its long-established stance.

The ministry explained that coordination is ongoing between the Egyptian and Israeli foreign ministers, as well as their Palestinian counterpart, within the framework of overseeing preparations for the meeting.

The expected meeting comes after the foreign ministers of the four countries met in the Jordanian capital of Amman in September, encouraging the Israeli and the Palestinian sides to work on reviving the peace process that has been frozen for years.

The phone call between Shoukry and Ashkenazi comes a day after Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed the Palestinian issue with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

El-Sisi affirmed, during the call, the importance of reaching a just and comprehensive solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people and to establish their independent state in accordance with international laws.
