Egypt has condemned deadly twin suicide bombings that killed and injured dozens of people in Baghdad on Thursday, the foreign ministry said.

In an official statement, Egypt’s foreign ministry expressed its condolences and sympathy to the Iraqi government and people over the terror attacks.

Egypt stressed its support for Iraq in its efforts to maintain peace and stability and combat all forms of terrorism and extremism.

At least 28 people were killed and 73 were injured in the twin suicide bombings in a market in central Baghdad’s Tayaran Square. The attack is the first of its kind in years.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility; however, the country’s Civil Defense Chief Major Kadhim Salman told journalists that the Islamic State terrorist group might be behind the bombing.

This is the first attack of its kind in Baghdad since the defeat of the Islamic State group.

The last deadly suicide bombing in the capital killed at least 27 people in January 2018.
