Youth, Hanager, Avant-Garde: Three of Cairo's theatres welcome new directors

Sameh Bassiouny, Shady Sorour, and Adel Hassaan were appointed directors of the Youth, Hanager, and Avant-Garde theatres respectively


Minister of Culture Ines Abdel-Dayem appointed three prominent Egyptian theatre makers as new directors for three of Cairo's well-established theatres.

Abdel-Dayem appointed Shady Sorour as the director of the Hanager Theatre, succeeding Mohamed El-Desouky.

Sameh Bassiouny was appointed director of the Youth (Shabab) Theatre, replacing Adel Hassaan, who has been assigned the directorship of the Avant Garde (Al-Talia) Theatre.

Sorour, who was appointed the directorship of the Hanager Theatre, is known to Egyptian theatre, film, and television, where he performed alongside well-known actors.

His most recent appearances in film included Tesaaa, Azazeel, and television series Al-Gamaa. In theatre, he directedthe play ‘Al-Ghaiboba’ (The Coma), starring Ahmad Bedeir and Mohamed El-Sawy, as well as ‘Al-Mahrousa Wi Al-Mahrous’, starring Sawsan Badr.

Sameh Bassiouny, who is now heading the Youth Theatre, is known for working with Mowagha (Confrontation) theatre troupe. Most recently, the company participated in ‘Laugh, Think, Know', an initiative launched by the culture ministry during the last wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative aimed to present ten plays inspired by Anton Chekhov's works that were showcased on the ministry's YouTube channel.

The new director of the Avant-Garde Theatre is Adel Hassaan, who is departing from the Youth Theatre after heading it since 2017.

Even prior to his work with the Youth Theatre, he has directed numerous plays in Cairo’s theatres, such asMot Fawdawy Sodfa (Chaotic Accidental Death), Al-Gabal (The Mountain), and a highly successfulplay based on Elif Shafak's The Forty Rules of Love (Qawaed Al-Eshq Al-Arbaen) in Salam Theatre. In 2018, he launched a series of acting workshops titled Start Your Dream (Ebda’ Helmak) in the Youth Theatre.
