Sunderland winger Ahmed Elmohamdy suffered his second head injury this season on Sunday as he picked up a head wound during the 1-1 draw against Newcastle.

“Elmohamady is bearing another battle scar after coming off worse in an unfortunate derby clash,” Sunderland announced in a statement on their official website on Monday.

“The Egyptian winger took a blow to the head early on and was forced off while he received eight stitches just above his lip. He completed the game despite the problem,” they added.

This is the second head injury for the Pharaohs star this month after the one he suffered during the match against Blackburn on New Year’s day.

Black Cats manager Steve Bruce is hoping the 23-year old international player will be available for Saturday’s game against Blackpool as his squad is threatened by the injuries of Lee Cattermole and Danny Welbeck.

Sunderland are sixth in the table with 34 points, 11 behind the leaders Manchester United.
