Sheikh Gamal Saber endorses Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi for Egypt's top job, despite Abu-Ismail's expected endorsement of Abul-Fotouh

Sheikh Gamal Saber, the campaign manager of former Salafist presidential candidate Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail, is backing the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi for president, he announced Tuesday.

Morsi is the only candidate who has stated he will implement Islamic Law (Sharia) if elected, Saber said.

The move comes despite the expected endorsement by Abu-Ismail of the moderate Islamist candidate Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh.

“This shows that our [Salafist] movement is not dictatorial, respects other opinions and depends on consultation,” Saber stated.

He called on the new president to implement sharia law to ensure peace, security, and stability for all Egyptians and the world at large.

Abu-Ismail was eliminated from the presidential race in April by the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission (SPEC) due to his late mother's dual Egyptian-American nationality.

Elections will take place on Wednesday and Thursday with a runoff vote on 16 and 17 June if no single candidate wins an outright majority.

The president will be formally named on 21 June.
