Ahmed Elmohamady says he is close to joining English Premier League side West Ham United

Sunderland’s out-of-favour winger Ahmed Elmohamady claims he could finalise a move to English Premier League newly-promoted side West Ham United next week.

“West Ham are in talks with me. There could be something next week,” Elmohamady said in a brief phone interview with Modern Sport following Egypt’s 2-0 victory over Mozambique in Friday’s World Cup qualifier.

The 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Sunderland since coach Martin O’Neill took over at the club in December.

He has made few appearances since then amid reports linking him with a move back to the Egyptian Premier League, where he had stints with Ghazl El-Mahalla and ENPPI before joining Sunderland in the summer of 2010.

Elmohamady is currently on international duty as the Egypt national team prepares for several games in June in the World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifying campaigns.

They beat Mozambique in their opening Group G game and will face Guinea away from home on 10 June.
