Protesters began arriving in Tahrir Square on Friday morning for a mass rally demanding the retrial of former president Hosni Mubarak and his top officials, and the enforcement of the Disenfranchisement Law.

According to the law, a limited number of individuals who served in top positions during the last ten years of Hosni Mubarak’s rule – including Ahmed Shafiq – would be ineligible to enter the presidential race or run for public office for the next five years.

The entrances to the square were being secured to block the flow of traffic before the protest begins.

A number of marches will set off from major streets around Cairo after noon prayers and head to Tahrir Square.

Marches will also take place in other major cities.

By 11:30 two podiums had been erected in the square, one by the Youth for Justice and Freedom movement and one by the Coalition of Revolutionary Forces movement.

The April 6 Youth Movement, the Ultras football fan groups and a number of other revolutionary groups made the call for Friday's protest.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and Salafist Nour Party, the two largest parties in Egypt's parliament, have announced they will be taking part in the protests.

The liberal Egyptian Social Democratic Party, the moderate Islamist Wasat Party and the Socialist Popular Alliance Party have also announced their intention to participate in the protests.
