Last Tuesday, Zahi Hawass, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), received an honorary doctorate from the New University of Lisbon in Portugal.

The ceremony was held at the university’s main campus and was attended by the university’s president, professors, Egyptian Ambassador to Portugal Hamdi Loza, and several other ambassadors, including those of Algeria, Palestine and Iraq.

During the ceremony, the president of the university delivered a speech highlighting Hawass’s accomplishments in the field of Egyptology and archaeology. After receiving his degree, Hawass addressed the assembly on his success, as well as ongoing efforts in Egypt.

Hawass is the first person from an Arab nation and the second African to receive an honorary doctorate from the New University of Lisbon, which is listed as one of the top 400 universities in the world.

The day after the ceremony, Hawass delivered a lecture about his use of groundbreaking genetic technology to reveal the secrets of the royal mummies in Egypt.
