Israeli soldiers tell tales of murder and abuse

In a recently published expose, Israelis talk of the killings and abuse of Palestinian civilians sanctioned by the military establishment

A recently published Israeli book tells the stories of soldiers who participated in the killing and unjustifiable abuse of Palestinian civilians.

It cites Israeli NGO Breaking Silence (Shovrim Shtika)which investigates the behaviour of Israeli soldiers towards Palestinians.

The book relays the testimonies and stories of soldiers who have served in the occupied territories and went on to "break the silence". They spoke of the abuse and criminality Palestinian civilians were subjected to under Israeli military orders.

One soldier reported that his commanding officers would order the launch of tens of super-sonic bombs in the streets of Al-Khalil to terrorise Palestinians.

Another soldier said they would shoot and kill the mesahharatis (night callers) in Ramadan.

A large number of soldiers would offer protection to violent settlers as they attacked and abused Palestinians.

Soldiers generally do not interfere when settlers viciously beat Palestinian villagers, however when Palestinians try to defend themselves the soldiers attack them.

The author mentions a soldier called Shaul, who said he would pursue Palestinian civilians and execute them before they reached refugee camps.

Their engagement in the military establishment corrupts the Israeli youth, another soldier said, adding that Israelis believe whatever the military tells them.

"We realise that the government lies and that they do not want peace. So we had to act," he added.
