Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah appreciates Egypt's choice of Morsi as the new president, hoping God may guide him in his path in the service of Islam and the service of Egypt and its people

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah on Monday wished success to Mohamed Morsi following his victory in Egypt's highly polarised presidential election, the SPA news agency reported.

"We appreciate this choice...and hope God will grant you success and guide you in your path in the service of Islam and the service of Egypt and its people," the report quoted the king as saying.

Five other Gulf states -- the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar -- had on Sunday welcomed Morsi's victory soon after it was announced.

Morsi is Egypt's first president since the uprising that toppled former strongman Hosni Mubarak last year.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Morsi won 51.73 percent of the vote, defeating Ahmed Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister.
