Muslim Brotherhood leader Essam El-Erian denied that he had succeeded Mohamed Morsi as the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), the Brotherhood’s political arm, as earlier stated by the party’s official website.

El-Erian, on the Brotherhood’s official site Ikhwanonline, said that he is still holding his position as the FJP’s vice-president, saying the party’sgeneral assembly is entitled to appoint the new president.

He said a meeting of the general assemblyis yet to be scheduledto pick the new chairman of the party.

El-Erianput the wrong reports on the FJP new chairman down to an editorial mistake.“What was published on the official site of the Freedom and Justice Party was a mistake of one of the editors, and he is being questioned now,” El-Erian told the Muslim Brotherhood's website Ikhwanonline.

Morsi resigned following his success in Egypt’spresidential race on Sunday. His decision to resign from the party was due to the fact that he had announced his wish to be the "president for all Egyptians" and not just members of his party or the Brotherhood.

He also resigned as a member of the Brotherhood’s Shura Council for the same reason.
