Five suspects arrested last Friday for plotting 4 August attacks on Egypt-Gaza border bailed by Sinai prosecution; families protest their innocence

North Sinai prosecution has released five detainees arrested in connection with the 4 August attacks on the Egypt-Gaza border which saw 16 soldiers shot dead and seven injured, after they reportedly paid a bail of LE500.

The five, who have beenreleased pending further investigations, are accused of plotting the deadly assault on the soldiers and the border with Israel. The attacks have been blamed on armed Islamist militant groups.

Police together with the armed forces arrested the men on 10 August, calling them 'terrorists' in an official statement. Al-Ahram Arabic language news website met with the suspects' families last Sunday, who denied the charges.

Egypt’s security forces continue to conduct raids on the North Sinai region as part of the military-led “Operation Eagle” aimed at purging the peninsula of militant activity, which was launched Wednesday last week.
