Charges filed against SCAF for killing protesters

Lawyer files charges against senior politicians and military figures for their alleged role in deaths in Port Said, Mohamed Mahmoud, Maspero and outside Cabinet building

Charges have been filedwith the general prosecutor against a number of senior politicians and military figures for the killing of protesters since the January 2011 uprising.

Lawyer Assem Qandil filed the charges on Wednesday against former head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussein Tantawi, former head of the Military Police Hamdi Badeen, and former interior ministers Mahmoud Wagdi and Mansour El-Essawi.

Qandeel called for the prosecutor to investigate thePort Saiddisaster, at which over 70 football supporters died due to negligence by the security forces in February; the killing of protesters during the cabinet andMohamed Mahmoudclashes late last year, and theMasperoclashes at which dozens of Coptic Christian demonstration were killed by the military in October last year. The SCAF, headed by Tantawi, was in power when the events took place.

No officials have been held accountable for the events.
