The newly formed government of Prime Minister Hisham Qandil has decided that every ministry will allocate one day per week to address the demands of respective sector workers.

The 18-day uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011 sparked a wave of strikes by workers throughout the country, with a multitude of demands expressed, including a minimum wage of LE1200, permanent contracts and better working conditions.

Strikes have continued after Mohamed Morsi took power in June, with textile workers at state-owned Mahalla Misr Spinning and Weaving Company, as well as seven other companies, going on strike in July.
