Former moderate-Islamist Wasat Party MP Essam Sultan warns against opposition to Islamists based on identity rather than policies
Essam Sultan, former MP for the moderate-IslamistWasat Party, has warned against what he describes as blind opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood purely for ideological reasons, rather than based on their actual economic and social policies.
Opposition to the 'Islamic identity' in general has been growing in some quarters, even towards a moderate form of Islam, Sultan said on his Facebook page.
Moreover, he criticised the "dangerous transformation" of opposition groups, which he said have become very hostile to anyone belonging to the Islamist trend, even moderates.
Furthermore, Sultan said some opposition figures had turned blindly against anyone in power, simply based on their personal identity [as an Islamist].
Essam Sultan is a founding member of the Wasat Party and recently launched a lawsuit against former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq for squandering public funds.
