Rafaat Shahata cuts short Turkey trip following two-day Israeli assault on Gaza

Major General Mohamed Rafaat Shahata, the head of the Egyptian Intelligence, has returned to Cairo after cutting short his visit to Turkey early Thursday in order to follow up on the latest developments in Gaza.

According to informed sources, Shahata returned after spending several days holding talks about cooperation between Egypt and Turkey.

Before becoming head of the Egyptian Intelligence, Shahata was among those that played an important role in brokering a truce between Gaza and Israel. He also played a major role in the Gilad Shalit prisoners' swap deal.

Late Hamas military leader Ahmed El-Jaabari, who was assassinated in Gaza by Israeli forces Wednesday, was photographed alongside Major General Shahata while transferring Shalit to Egypt last October.
