Brazil names Scolari as new coach

With memories of 2002 tournament, Scolari will lead Brazil at World Cup at home

The Brazilian soccer federation says Luiz Felipe Scolari has been hired to coach of the national team, returning 10 years after he led the nation to its fifth World Cup title at the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.

The former Chelsea and Portugal coach replaces Mano Menezes, who was fired last week because the federation didn't like his methods.

Scolari was without a job since leaving Brazilian club Palmeiras, which was relegated after the coach left in September.

By picking the popular coach to replace the criticized Menezes, the Brazilian federation shields itself ahead of next year's Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
