British Embassy services pause as clashes and violence on Cairo's streets heighten after Egyptians mark the revolution's second anniversary
The British Embassy in Cairo announced on its website that it would be closed to the public Sunday, 27 January 2013.
British foreign officer for the Middle East Alistair Burt condemned the eruption of violence in Egypt over the weekend in celebration of the second anniversary of the outset of the revolution in January 2011, reported Reuters.
Deadly clashes had erupted across Egypton Friday and lasted through the weekend. In Cairo, clashes continue between police and protesters around Tahrir Square.
The situation also remains tense in the coastal city of Port Said after Saturday violent clashes left at least 32 dead and over 300 injured.
Clashes have also erupted on Saturday in Port Said when an unfavorable verdict slammed 21 Port Said residents, accused in the 2011 football violence case, with death penalties.
At least 40 have been killed in nationwide clashes over past two days inthe Egyptian cities of Cairo, Port Said, Suez and Ismailia.
The American Embassy has also announced that it would be closing with the rising security concerns. The area around both embassies in Cairo's downtown area of Garden Cityis stillwitnessing intermittent violence in the past few days.
