An Egyptian Coptic priest was found with his throat slit in his apartment in southern Egypt after a robbery, police said Wednesday, sparking protests by hundreds of Copts in the capital Cairo.

Father Daoud Boutros, from Shotb near the city of Assiut, was found in his flat late Wednesday by his daughter who had been unable to reach him by telephone for two days, the official said.

"Someone had broken into the safe and we found it was empty, indicating it was a robbery," the official said.

Several hundred Copts denounced the killing in a demonstration after a service at the cathedral in downtown Cairo, witnesses said.
