Despite long-standing differences, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas congratulates Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal on another four-year term, following Monday's elections in Cairo
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday congratulated Hamas' vetern leader Khaled Meshaal for his re-election despite contentions between the two.
The West Bank's Fatah welcomed the re-election of Meshaal and considered him the appropriate person for the coming period, which will require more Palestinian cooperation, in a statement published on Wednesday.
Meshaal, 57, was re-elected as head of the Palestinian resistance group's politburo for another four-year term, following internal elections that took place in Cairo on Monday.
A Palestinian reconciliation deal has been on the rocks between the Gaza based Hamas movement, which has ruled since 2007, and the West Bank's Fatah Party since both groups recognise themselves to be the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
