A traffic incident involving a number of vehicles killed 8 and injured 7 on Monday morning

Eight people have been killed and at least seven injured in a car crash on Cairo's ring road on Monday morning.

Ayman El-Dabe, spokesperson for Egypt's General Department of Traffic, told private television channel ONTV in an interview on Monday that a winch, a taxi and a lorry carrying sand crashed on the highway, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The injured have been transferred to hospital while transport officials have arrived at the site to re-open the road for vehicles.

Cairo’s ring road, which connects several major districts of the city and is a key route for commuter traffic, is a common site of traffic accidents.

A 2011 report issued by Egypt's Central Authority for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) showed that road and rail accidents claimed the lives of over 7,000 Egyptians in 2010.
