Dozens of patients have refused to have dialysis treatment at a hospital in Kom Ombo, Upper Egypt after a woman died in the dialysis room.

Patients said Laila Khatab had died due to negligence after suffering acute circulatory failure when no doctors or nurses were present.

A number of elderly patients were forced to accept dialysis treatment at the hospital after their health deteriorated.

Last October, Egypt’s doctors went on a partial strike to demand healthcare reforms and better pay for workers in the sector.

The doctors also called for 15 percent of the state budget, instead of the current 5 per cent, to be allocated to health, and an improvement in security at hospitals and medical centres which had been the target of recent attacks.

The strike officially ended in March during the annual general assembly meeting of the Doctors' Syndicate.
