Zagazig University students who were hospitalised Friday afternoon and preliminarily diagnosed with food poisoning have all been allowed to leave the hospital, Egypt's health ministry announces.
After eating at a restaurant in the women's dorms, a number between 48 – 150 were admitted to the hospital. The head of Sharqiya hospitals, Salem El-Deeb told Al-Ahram Arabic-language news website that the university hospital records show 48 female students were admitted on Friday, meanwhile the health ministry speaks of 150 students being admitted.
Zagazig University president Mohamed Abd El-Aal closed all dormitory restaurants and cafeterias across campus to review their status and undergo maintenance but stated Saturday's final exams will go on as scheduled.
Zagazig University food poisoning incident is the third of its kind after two incidents at Cairo's Al-Azhar University within the past weeks.
On 1 April, over 500 Al-Azhar students were hospitalised due to food poisoning. Similarly, less than one month later 161 Al-Azhar students became ill after eating on campus.
Ten individuals accused of responsibility for the 1 April mass food poisoning incident are currently on trial on charges of negligence.
