Zamalek’s under-fire manager Hossam Hassan said he could leave Egypt due to the heavy criticism he is being subjected to following the popular Egyptian uprising.

The former Egypt striker landed himself in hot water after launching an attack against the protesters in Tahrir Square days before former president Hosni Mubarak stepped down.

“I was just asking for stability, I was never against the revolution. I’m one of the people who suffered a lot because of the former regime,” Hassan told a news conference on Wednesday.

“I do not deserve to be treated like that, I made a lot of achievements for this country. There are some people who are trying to force me out of Zamalek to halt my success.

“I will leave Egypt and travel to the United Arab Emirates if the unjustified attack against me continues.”

Hassan, who spent a brief loan spell at UAE side Al-Ain during his hugely-successful playing career, was recently involved in a fracas with several people who were allegedly angry at his comments during the revolt.

The Cairo giants are currently top of the Egyptian Premier League table but the competition has been suspended since the eruption of the revolution on 25 January. It remains to be seen whether it would be resumed.

The team are preparing to face Tunisia’s Club Africain in the CAF Champions League round of 32. The first leg will take place on 19 March away from home.
