Hassan Abdel-Rahman, former head of the now-disbanded State Security Apparatus, was acquitted Wednesday by a Giza criminal court of charges that he ordered the destruction of state security documents in the aftermath of the January 25 Revolution. Forty other security officers were also acquitted of charges related to the case.

In early March 2011, revolutionaries stormed state security headquarters in Cairo and Alexandria to uncover atrocities committed by the notoriously repressive apparatus.

They said that documents which could potentially implicate the apparatus in criminal activity were being destroyed by security officials. Following this event, the Egyptian armed forces seized control of state security buildings across the country.

The State Security Apparatus was dissolved 11 days later.

In his testimony last April, Minister of Defense Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi stated that the State Security Apparatus did not inform military intelligence that the documents were in danger, adding that the army did not know the content of the destroyed documents.
