Mubarak sons referred to criminal court for 'presidential palace' corruption trial
Former presidential scions Gamal and Alaa Mubarak are referred to criminal court to answer charges that they squandered more than LE1 billion in public funds when their father was president
Egyptian Prosecutor-General Talaat Abdullah on Thursday referred ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons – Gamal and Alaa – to a criminal court where they will face corruption charges.
The two men, along with the former president, are charged with squandering LE1.1 billion worth of public monies and illicitly redirecting state funds allocated to the renovation of presidential palaces towards their own private residences.
In April, the senior Mubarak was slapped with a 15-day extension of his ongoing detention pending further investigations into the same charges.
The ousted president is also currently awaiting a retrial on charges related to the death of anti-regime protesters during Egypt's January 2011 uprising.
A date for the retrial has yet to be set.
