Farouq El-Oqda, former governor of Egypt's central bank, is tapped to head up interim government during country's upcoming transitional phase
Talks are currently underway with Farouq El-Oqda, former governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, to head up a new cabinet during the upcoming period of political transition, according to informed sources quoted by Al-Ahram's Arabic-language news website.
Al-Ahram reports that negotiations with El-Oqda, who is currently in London, began after Mohamed ElBaradei, Constitution Party head and leading member of the opposition National Salvation Front umbrella group, turned down offers to take up the post.
ElBaradei reportedly voiced a preference for serving the nation in an unofficial capacity.
Meanwhile, other figures have been touted for the premiership should El-Oqda decline the offer, including Mohamed Ghoneim and banker Adel El-Labban.
Al-Ahram also reports that the incoming cabinet will include three deputies to the prime minister. The first deputy will be responsible for security affairs, the second for economic affairs and the third for social justice.
