Moderate-Islamist Wasat Party says military's departure from domestic politics is 'only solution' to Egypt's current precarious state of affairs
The moderate-Islamist Wasat Party on Monday said that the military's exit from Egypt's fraught political stage was the "only solution" to the country's current political crisis, state news agency MENA reported on Monday.
The call came in reaction to deadly clashes early Monday morning between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi outside the headquarters of Egypt's Republican Guard in Cairo's Nasr City district.
The violence left 51 dead and 435 injured.
Wasat Party leader Abul-Ela Madi also demanded the resignation of "those who recently appointed themselves to run Egypt's transitional phase."
Morsi – Egypt's first-ever freely elected president – was forced out of office last week by the military following massive countrywide demonstrations to demand his impeachment and snap presidential polls.
Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi, General Commander of the Egyptian Armed Forces, subsequently unveiled a "roadmap" for Egypt's post-Morsi political transition, suspending Egypt's new constitution and appointing High Constitutional Court head Adly Mansour as interim president pending fresh presidential elections.
