A senior US official says that China's human rights situation continues to deteriorate and that the latest round of dialogue with Chinese officials on human rights fell short of US expectations.

Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Uzra Zeya said at a news briefing Friday in Beijing that the US is concerned that China is increasingly harassing and targeting family members and associates of activists and that policies in ethnic regions of Tibet and Uighur have become more repressive.

Zeya led the US delegation to this year's US-China Human Rights Dialogue, which took place Tuesday and Wednesday in the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming.

Zeya said raising human rights issues with China is difficult but remains a vital part of US diplomacy.
