A court ordered Hosni Mubarak be released until he is tried on one set of corruption charges, but he will remain in custody as he is also being detained for a separate case
A Cairo court has ordered the release of Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak in an ongoing corruption case in which he is accused of squandering public funds to renovate his private residences, pending his trial.
The case includes Mubarak's sons, Alaa and Gamal, whom the court ordered would stay in custody, unlike their father.
The three are charged with squandering LE1.1 billion worth of public monies and illicitly redirecting state funds allocated to the renovation of presidential palaces towards their own private residences.
Mubarak will remain in custody as he faces charges in another corruption case, the so-called "Ahram gifts" case, where he is charged of granting gifts illegally – alongside his wife and youngest son Gamal – from the state's ministry of information.
Another court also ordered the former president to be released pending a trial in a case in which he is being retried for charges of complicity in the killing of over 800 protesters in the January 2011 uprising.
