34 million passengers passed through Egypt's airports in 2012, reports CAPMAS; Egypt's air companies offer discounts to further encourage tourism
Egypt’s total number of airport passengers rose by 16 percent in 2012, compared with 2011, reaching 34 million, state statistics body CAPMAS reported on Monday.
According to the report, the country’s total number of flights through Egyptian airports was 331.7 thousand in 2012, a 6.6 percent increase from 2011.
Air-transported goods registered 281.7 thousand tonnes in 2012 compared with 285.5 thousand tonnes in 2011, representing a decline of 1.3 percent.
In a related development on Monday, Egypt Air stated that it would offer a 20 per cent discount on all international flights to and from Egypt, except those heading to Jeddah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia, as these destinations are affiliated with pilgrimage programmes.
The Egyptian carrier's offer is part of an initiative to boost air traffic to and from Egypt, and is set to last until 14 September.
Egypt’s air companies associated with the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation have cooperated with several hotels in the country’s most prominent tourism cities of Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh to introduce half-board programmes starting from LE1000 (roughly $143), including air travel and accomodation for three nights between 1 and 15 September in an attempt to support local tourism.
