The Ghana midfielder was not named in Chelsea's squad for the Champions League group stage, new signing Samuel Eto'o included in the roster

Chelsea's Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien was left out of the team's squad for the European Champions League group stage.

His omission will fuel speculation over Essien's future at Stamford Bridge after he returned to the club after a one-year loan spell at Spanish giants Real Madrid, who were also managed by Jose Mourinho before the Portuguese returned to Chelsea in the summer.

Meanwhile, Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o made Chelsea's Champions League squad after completing his move to the Blues from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

The 32-year-old also had a stint under Mourinho at Italian side Inter Milan.
