Egypt Post employees stage a sit-in in front of the cabinet building, calling for the re-appointment of Hani Mahmoud as chairman

Hundreds of Egypt Post employees staged a sit-in in front of the cabinet building, calling for the immediate re-appointment of Hani Mahmoud as chairman of the company.

The former vice president of Vodafone Egypt was installed as Egypt Post chief on January 15 and resigned after employees’ disputes and complaints excessively piled up of late.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Maged Osman accepted Mahmoud’s resignation Thursday while the latter is set to meet Prime Minister Essam Sharaf on Sunday.

Some of Egypt Post employees went on a strike and decided to stay in front of the cabinet building until their ‘demands’ are met.

“We categorically refuse the resignation of Hani Mahmoud and want him to stay on as Egypt Post chairman, with the continuation of the efforts exerted to reveal the widespread corruption,” read a written statement made by the protesters.

“We would like to inform you of the beginning of our sit-in today and that we will stay put till our demands are fulfilled.”

Mahmoud came up with plans to hire the sons of the workers and the alumni of Helwan University’s postal section, according to his supporters.

He was also considering granting the employees pay rises and other substantial perks.

“Engineer Mahmoud Hani vowed to stand up against the corruption in the company,” the protesters said.
