West African nation fires coach Paulo Duarte after failing to reach 2013 African Cup of Nations and 2014 World Cup
Gabon has released national team coach Paulo Duarte after their elimination from the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
"Following the failure of Gabon to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2014 World Cup, the football federation has decided to terminate the contract of interim coach Paulo Duarte," the Gabon Football Association (GFA) announced.
"This decision was motivated by two factors: the non accomplishment of assigned objectives and the need to bring to an end the interim staff that has been handling the team since 2012," the statement added.
Gabon failed to reach the last phase of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers after placing third in Group E with seven points. They lost three games in the qualifiers to Niger, Congo and Burkina Faso.
