'Retweet if you want this #shutdown to end,' President Barack Obama writes on Twitter
US President Barack Obama has posted a tweet about the federal government shutdown.
"Retweet if you want this #shutdown to end," Obama wrote on Wednesday.
The message, which has been retweeted more than 26,000 times and favourited more than 3,000 times, has caused a wide-range of comments among supporters and opponents.
"I work 2 full time jobs got 3 kids no child support I can co-op do what it takes I wud rather go to jail than have Obamacare," one anti-Obama Twitter user commented.
"Even in the most negative of the recent polls, only 33% want [Obamacare] delayed," another user argued.
Obama had a "Golden Tweet" in 2012 following his election victory over Republican rival Mitt Romney. “Four more years,” was retweeted over 810,000 times.
The United States lurched into a government shutdown on Tuesday for the first time in 17 years, after Congress failed to end a bitter budget row.
Ten minutes before midnight, the White House budget office issued an order for many government departments to start closing down, furloughing 800,000 federal workers and shutting tourists out of monuments like the Statue of Liberty, national parks and museums.
Prospects for a swift resolution of the mess were unclear, raising concerns over the impact on the struggling US economic recovery, AFP reported.
The impasse, marked by ugly partisan rhetoric in the bitterly divided US political system, has seen Republicans repeatedly try to tie new government funding to attempts to defund, delay or dismantle Obama's signature health care law.
