Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon has ratified a bill passed by the Canadian parliament which allows Canada to freeze the assets of former rulers.
In a statement sent by Cannon to the Canadian embassy in Cairo, he said that the new bill is vital because recently several countries, including Egypt, have requested that Canada freezes the assets of its former rulers who are accused of corruption.
Cannon had visited Egypt last week and was told that several requests were sent to Canada to freeze the assets of former President Mubarak, his family and aides. The bill is believed to be Canada’s response to the request.
