Egypt PM Hazem El-Beblawi, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim attend funeral for Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Mabrouk
An official funeral was held on Monday for Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Mabrouk, who was killed by unknown assailants late on Sunday.
The funeral procession left from Al-Shorta Mosque in Cairo on Monday afternoon.
Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi was present at the funeral. He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, adding that authorities will work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Also in attendance were Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, Local Development Minister Adel Labib, and Manpower Minister Kamal Abu Eita, among others.
Mabrouk, who worked with the police's National Security Apparatus, was shot near his home in Cairo's eastern district of Nasr City on Sunday night. Sources told Al-Ahram's Arabic website that Mabrouk was hit by seven bullets fired by unknown gunmen in a drive-by shooting.
The Interior Ministry said that Mabrouk was responsible for investigating some of the cases against deposed president Mohamed Morsi, as well as a number of militant cells.
President Morsi was ousted in July amidst nationwide protests against his rule. Since then, authorities have launched a crackdown on Morsi supporters, namely the Muslim Brotherhood group from which he hails. Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood members have been arrested, and protests in support of the former president often end in clashes.
Egypt's National Security Apparatus -- previously named the State Security Apparatus -- is infamous for its role in political repression during the 30-year reign of ousted president Hosni Mubarak.
