Art Alert: Townhouse celebrates 15 years with three exhibitions
Ahram Online, Monday 25 Nov 2013
On its 15-year anniversary, Townhouse will host two solo exhibitions by prominent contemporary artists Huda Lutfi and Lara Baladi, as well as a third collective residency project

Townhouse, one of Egypt's most prominent independent art spaces, launched in December 1998 with a small exhibition on the first floor of a residential building tucked in one of downtown Cairo's side streets. Since then, it has dramatically expanded its scope, hosting more than 100 exhibitions across the years, establishing the city's first contemporary art library, setting up studios for international resident artists, running outreach programs, and much more.

This December, Townhouse celebrates a decade and a half with three exhibitions to "celebrate our history while looking towards the future," according to their press release.

Two solo exhibitions by prominent contemporary artists Huda Lutfi ("Cut and Paste") and Lara Baladi ("Freedom is Coming") will run in December. Lutfi and Baladi, both internationally renowned artists, exhibited their artwork at Townhouse's fourth exhibition in March 1999.

The third exhibition, dubbed "Social Security," is an experimental collective working space for emerging artists. The first floor of Townhouse will be transformed into studio areas for visual artists, graphic designers and a filmmaker, who will use the space throughout December to collaboratively develop "alternative forms of fundraising and new tactics for sustainability," according to Townhouse.

"These three exhibitions celebrate the artists that are integral to Townhouse’s history and who will continue to shape our identity in the years to come," reads the press release.

Programme:
Exhibition opens 1 December at 7pm and runs until 8 January.
