Activists to face trial for rioting and breaking controversial new assembly which critics say is designed to stifle dissent


The prosecutor-general has referred prominent activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah and 24 others to court on charges of rioting and breaking the protest law.

Abdel-Fattah was arrested at his homeon 28 November for allegedly calling for protests in contravention of the new law.

Prosecutors also charged him with thuggery and incitement of violence after a policeman was allegedly assaulted by protesters and had his radio stolen.

Abdel-Fattah's detention was extended for a further 15 days on 1 December.

The other defendants were arrested at a protest against military trials for civilians on 26 November.

On 4 December, a court ordered 23them to be released on bail of LE5,000 after they appealed their detention. The remaining defendant did not submit an appeal.

Under the new law, protest organisers must submit plans for their demonstrations to the authorities at least three days before they take place. Failure to do so can result in fines or jail terms.
