Ahmed Hassan says Bin Hammam will make Arabs proud if he is elected as FIFA’s president
Egypt skipper Ahmed Hassan said he backs Qatari Mohamed Bin Hammam to unseat long-serving president Sepp Blatter in the presidential elections for football's world governing body FIFA.
Bin Hammam revealed his intention to run for the prestigious seat before FIFA congress in Zurich in June.
He is hoping to become the ninth president of FIFA and the first from Asia and the Arab world, while Swiss Blatter, 75, is eyeing a fourth term at the helm.
“A victory for Bin Hammam will mean a lot to me and many Arab football figures. His nomination is a source of pride for all Arabs,” Hassan, who is three matches short of becoming the world’s most capped player at the international level, told Qatari paper Al-Arab.
“I believe that Bin Hammam has a strong chance to win this election. I’m fully aware of his professionalism; he will never enter that race unless he is sure he can win.
“I’m pleased that (Egyptian FIFA executive committee member) Hani Abou-Reida publicly said he would vote for Bin Hammam.”
Abou-Reida voted for Qatar when it became the first Arab country to gain the rights to host the World Cup.
“I’m optimistic because Bin Hammam played a key role in helping Qatar win the rights to host the 2022 World Cup. I’m also ready to help him if I’m asked to,” Hassan added.
