Cairo University’s security attempted Wednesday to disperse a sit-in which began on 6 March to demand the resignation of the president and his administrative council. In the wake of the attempt, around 1,000 students held demonstrations.

According to students, security staff were violent and fiercely beat one student. Security tried to disperse the sit-in outside the university’s dome on campus. Other sit-ins being staged at the faculties of commerce and mass communication were left untouched.

Although ministry of interior university police have not been allowed on campus since 26 February, students frequently argue that university security has effectively assumed the same role in compromising student freedoms. On 29 March, students accused the university guards of throwing stones to destroy the students’ tents.

The military has also previously tried to disperse the Cairo University sit-in at the faculty of mass communication. Students alleged that the military used violence and attacked them with electric tazors as it was trying to end the sit-in. The military denied these accusations.
