Egypt's first president Mohamed Naguib and Kahled Moheieddin, founder of the National Progressive Unionist (Tagamuu) Party, have been awarded the Order of the Nile, the state's highest honour.

Both were members of the Free Officers Movement that deposed King Farouk in 1952. Naguib fell out with Gamal Abdel-Nasser who became president in 1954.

Naguib was placed under house-arrest until president Anwar Sadat freed him after Nasser's death.

Granting the order to Naguib is significant because he was effectively removed from political and public life until his death in 1984, despite being freed from house arrest over a decade earlier.
