Egypt’s Supreme Electoral Commission has announced that Egyptian expats will vote on the referendum on the amended constitution from 8-12 January.

Medhat Idris, a member of the commission’s general secretariat, told state news agency MENA that voting will take place from 8am until 8pm according to the timing of each diplomatic delegation.

Egyptian expats won the right to cast votes in elections at Egyptian embassies and consulates abroad following the 25 January revolution.

The head of the commission, Nabil Salib, has reiterated that there is a ban on any campaigning, including banners or loudspeakers, within 200 metres of polling stations, whether in Egypt or abroad.

Expats who are not already registered to vote abroad will not be able to do so in the referendum.

Egyptian voters will go to the polls on the recently-amended 2012 constitution on 14-15 January.

The 2012 constitution has been suspended since the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi in July.

Amendments were made to the suspended constitution – which was passed at a national referendum in December 2012 – by a committee appointed by the interim authorities.
