Retired Egypt and Ahly icon Mohamed Abou-Treika beats teammate Ahmed Fathi and Nigerian midfielder Sunday Mba to the title
Retired Ahly ace Mohamed Abou-Treika has clinched the Africa-based player of the year award as Ahly were named the Club of the Year by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Thursday during the Glo-CAF awards ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria.
Abou-Treika, who has just hung up his boots after Ahly’s Club World Cup campaign back in December, claimed the title an unprecedented fourth time after previous wins in 2006, 2008 and 2012.
The midfield marvel alongside full-back Ahmed Fathi were the two Ahly players already shortlisted for the title, as the duo was included in Africa’s best XI.
Ahly also won the CAF Club of the Year title, beating off competition from Champions League finalists Orlando Pirates and Confederation Cup holders Sfaxien.
Ahly have been favourites for the title after securing the Champions League at the expense of South Africa’s Pirates, claiming a record-eighth trophy.
Egypt young star Saleh Gomaa, however, was not as well lucky – having been beaten by Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho for Africa’s Most Promising Talent.
Ivory Coast star Yaya Toure won Africa’s Football of the Year award for the third year running.
Nigeria had the lion’s share of the CAF awards, with the national side winning the team of the year as manager Stephen Keshi was named the Coach of the Year.
U-17 World Cup holders Nigeria were named the Youth National team of the year as the CAF Fair Play gong was awarded to the Super Eagles’ supporters.
