Ghana and Chelsea attacking midfielder Michael Essien has reached an agreement to join Italy Serie giants AC Milan this winter, Football Italia reported on Friday.

Essien's agent held talks with Milan head Adriano Galliani about a possible move for the Ghana star to the Rossoneri before the winter transfer window closes this January.

The Italian website, Football Italia, also reported that the two sides agreed on the transfer terms as Essien will sign an 18-month contract with the Italian giants.

The 31-year-old midfielder is expected to help Milan in the Italy Serie A as well as the Champions League as he was not part of Chelsea's European squad this season.

The Ghanaian influential midfielder had been dropped from Chelsea's Champions League squad in August after failing to meet Mourinho's expectations.

Essien, who joined Chelsea in 2005, was a key element for the Londoners during their golden era, claiming a host of titles including a Champions League trophy in 2012 and two Premier League titles in 2006 and 2010.

However, the past three years of his career have been plagued with a spate of serious injuries that cost him his place amongst the starting eleven.

He hit top form in Ghana's recent World Cup qualifying matches, helping the Black Stars defeat Egypt 7-3 on aggregate and secure the team's place in Brazil in 2014.
