Contemporary Egyptian sculptor Laila Soliman died on Saturday. She was 81.

Born Laila Hassan Soliman Dawoud in 1932, Soliman graduated from the High Institute of Fine Arts before going to Germany to complete her studies.

Soliman was later a professor at Helwan University's Faculty of Art Education, a post she held from 1977 to 1982. In 1991, she became head of the same faculty's sculpture and ceramics department, before moving to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to work again as an arts professor.

She had many exhibitions in Egypt throughout her life, as well as a number of international shows, mostly in the period from the 1950s to 1970s. Her sculptures can be found in private collections in Egypt, the UK and Germany.

Her career was honoured with several prestigious awards – the 1955 Mokhtar Prize for Sculpture and the 1972 Prize for Sculpture at the 9th Alexandria International Biennale.

She also published a number of texts on philosophy and contemporary sculpture.

Soliman's wake will take place on Wednesday 5 February in Al-Hamdeya Al-Shazleya mosque in the west Cairo district of Mohandiseen.
