A suicide bomber attacked an Afghan army convoy in Kabul wounding three soldiers, two of them seriously, police said Saturday.

"A suicide attacker detonated explosives strapped to his body near an ANA (Afghan National Army) vehicle," Kabul police chief Mohammad Zaher said.

The incident happened in the east of the city and the area has been cordoned off.

Defence ministry spokesman Mohammad Azimi confirmed that a bus carrying army personnel had been attacked and that there had been casualties, but he did not know how many.

The Taliban and other insurgents in Afghanistan's near 10-year war frequently target the country's army and police forces.

The Afghan National Army has more than 150,000 troops and will play an increasing role in the country's security in the coming years as international forces are due to end combat operations in Afghanistan in 2014.

Responsibility for security in seven areas is being handed from foreign to Afghan troops from July, but security in Kabul is already the responsibility of local forces.
