Amr Hamzawy, research director and senior associate at the Carnegie Middle East Centre, announced his resignation from the Social Democratic Party after the newly formed party released a statement condemning the violence used against demonstrators in Tahrir Square early Saturday morning.

The statement also stated that the party disapproved the presence of military officers among the demonstrators adding that “reforms within the military institution is a right but one that should only be attained through constitutional and legal tools.”

Hamzawy said that he opposed the statement which he alleged had been written without the approval of all, as he himself had already objected to any reference made to the military institution. He added that the party’s decision was neither taken collectively nor with transparency.

The senior political analyst had already drafted a joint statement with the Muslim Brotherhood and George Isaac which was presented at a conference at the Press Syndicate. The statement read: “As representatives of the revolution we express regret regarding the violence that took place causing injuries and deaths.” They noted, however, that the signatories were conscious of attempts to create tensions between the army and people.The statement urged unity within the army and added that trust should not be broken between the military and the people, warning of potential chaos.

The statement was met with much criticism for failing to criticise the violence witnessed on Saturday, April 9 which left at least one officially reported dead and many injured.
