Art Alert: Evening with harp at the Cairo Opera

Acclaimed Egyptian harpist Manal Mohie Eldin will give a recital with her music ensemble on Tuesday 15 April at the Cairo Opera House


Joined by her Oriental ensemble, Manal Mohie Eldin will perform a selection of Arabic music arranged for harp at the Cairo Opera House on Tuesday 15 April.

Over the past few years, Manal Mohie Eldinhas become known to wider audiences both for her performances and, more recently, her politial activism. In May and June 2013, she joined the artists’ opposition to former president Mohamed Morsi and stood against his minister of culture Alaa Abdel-Aziz — who lasted in office from 7 May to 3 July 2013. Joining the sit-in held inside the ministry headquarters on near daily basis, Mohie Eldin also participated in the artistic activities organised on the street.

Her artistic accomplishments encompass several years of performances on Egypt's and the world's stages. As a soloist, she has countless recitals to her name, along with performances with numerous orchestras in Egypt: the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, the Cairo Opera Orchestra and the Cairo Festival Orchestra among others.

Currently, Mohie Eldin is a professor at the Cairo Conservatory. She continues to perform in Omar Khairat’s ensemble and with her own Oriental ensemble. Over the past decade, she gained popular fame thanks to her many performances with the Banat Al-Nil (Daughters of the Nile) Ensemble, which she co-founded in the early 2000s. With herManal Mohie Eldin Oriental Ensemble,she released a CD including an Arabic repertoire for harp.

In 2013 Mohie Eldin received a prestigious State Incentive Award for Arts.
