Mahmoud Abdel-Rehim, nicknamed Gennesh, has established himself as one of the best Egyptian keepers after living in the shadows of former Zamalek shot-stopper Ahmed El-Shennawi for years.

Gennesh admirably filled in for El-Shennawi following the latter's departure in the summer of 2018, producing a series of impressive displays which made him a fan favorite at Cairo club Zamalek.

The 32-year old showed a commanding presence and pulled off some great saves to lead Zamalek to their first ever CAF Confederation Cup title in May.

He was never a regular choice for Egypt and is usually criticized for failing to control his temper at times but his form could not be ignored by coach Javier Aguirre.

"Gennesh is my craziest keeper but I like him a lot and he is in a good form at the moment," Aguirre said during a TV interview.

Gennesh made has made six appearances for the Pharaohs since 2017. He had previously been called up by Aguirre but only played in the 1-0 defeat by Nigeria in a friendly game in March.

Since the retirement of Essam El-Hadary last year, no one has been able to fill his gloves. Ahly keeper Mohamed El-Shennawi is the current number one choice but he is set to face a stiff competition to keep his place.
